About Us

What we do!

Each student has a weekly one-on-one lesson with Cate where guidance in clear steps and smart practice approaches are offered. The student then goes home spending time daily reinforcing what was covered...and so we grow in our abilitites!

In addition, every student takes part in bi-weekly ensemble classes where we learn the art of playing in community.

Performances, workshops & orchestral activities

  • CatStrand Theater, New Galloway
  • Loch Arthur, Beeswing

  • Galloway Music Festival, Newton Stewart
  • Carlingwark & Barlochan (assisted living)
  • Glenkens Food Month Feastival, New Galloway
  • Dumfries & Galloway Arts Festival launch 2020, Dumfries

Workshops

Our students participate regularly in Suzuki workshops in Glasgow, Ayr, Edinburgh and England. In 2019 and 2020, Galloway Violin Studio hosted String Instrument Workshops - three days of master classes, string quartets, and chamber orchestra - with guest clinicians Linda & Domenick Fiore (Pennsylvania USA). Another workshop was held in 2023 with Suzuki Teacher Trainer Margaret Parkin (Oxford). For our January 2025 workshop, guest violinist and Professor of Violin RNCM,  Callum Smart, was able to join us. Participants from our local region, Central Belt, and northern England went away having received positive feedback and excellent tools for accessing more freedom and joy in our music play!

Special events 2024

Last year, our teen violin quintet participated in Scottish Young Musician Ensemble of the Year competition - a very positive experience. Also in 2024, we were 'gifted' a playing/coaching session with members of Scottish Ensemble.
